Giant Magpie Robin Statue at Dhaka
DIT Avenue: Dhaka: Bangladesh

Magpie Robin(Copsychus saularis) is the national bird of Bangladesh. Commonly known as Doyel (দোয়েল) has some ood impact on our national life. The bird is used in our currency landmark. Using as a symbol for Bangladesh. This bird also selected as the mascot of SA games of its last edition. This time, sight by walk edition is going to show the statue of a life size Oriental Magpie Robin. This statue caught my eye on my regular on road journey to cross Gulistan grid-lock, one of the busiest of Dhaka City. Any pedestrian can see this giant bird at the gate of Bangladesh Olympic Association building, while walking on DIT Avenue, from DIT building to Gulistan node.

The Replica of Giant Magpie Robin in front of Prime Minister's Office
দোয়েল চত্তর Doyel Circle at Dhaka University

Well, I have no proper idea about the size and height about this life size statue of this one. This statue is made in honor of 11th South Asian Games. There is another one of the same size at the entrance Prime Minister's Office. There is a popular sculpture of of this bird at Dhaka University, in the node of Shishu Academy and Curzon   Hall, but this one is like the original one looking for fly to catch. Enjoy.

Posankka The Piggyduck of Turku

The word Posankka, derives from the conjunction of Possu[pig] and Ankka[Duck]. Pink Posankka statue is made by Alvar GullichsenIt describes a mixture of pork and duck. The statue is about five meters long and seven meters high. It is made of glass fiber, resin, steel cord reinforced plastic. It represents a hybrid between a marzipan duck and a pig. This sculpture is a pig in a duck sitting style, at first thought it reminds me, the loony tunes character- the Porky Pig. I guess, young Alvar Gullichsen took his inspiration from the same character of my thought.

At first, Posankka was a floating on the Aurajoki river, since its installation in 1999, later it removed to the Caribian hotel. Latest installation near the campus area of the University of Turku and the Turku Student Village, makes it more famous and an icon of Turku for the last ten years(since 2001). According to local news site and wiki, Posankka has been wearing a large size Santa Clause hat in every winter by the students of its native campus. Take a closer look at this pink buddy with a white cap here[by aboturku]:

World's largest Jesus Christ Statue

World's largest Jesus Christ Statue

Swiebodzin (Swiebodzińskiego), Poland

Roman Catholic priests consecrated what local officials claim is the world’s largest statue of Jesus Christ in the presence of hundreds of Polish faithful on Sunday. Swiebodzin, a Polish town has officially unveiled the world’s largest Jesus statue- "Christ the King". The beautiful statue of Jesus surpasses the “Christ the Redeemer”, the famous Christ sculpture in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.

Sourfce: Youtube.com

Giant statue of a crowned Jesus Christ being erected in Swiebodzin, Poland. The statue, similar in design to the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, will be more than 100ft tall. Locally known as Chrustusa white figure has more than 50 meters in height, of which 16 feet is piled a mound. On top of the 36-meter statue is gilded crown. Weight of the entire structure is estimated at 440 tonnes. This statue is lighter the in comparison to its progenitor. Miroslaw Kazimiez Patecki is the master architect of this Statue.

Similarity with The Redeemer is that both the Christ is clothed in long robes, standing motionless and outstretched hand, but the Polish version of the coat is much less clearcut and folded at the waist, a short tunic replaced the arm of the type imposed on the cape.

Here is a critical review by Piotr Sarzyński:

Head of Christ in Rio is gently lowered (looks over the city at the foot), and the face has a much more synthetic features, a beard almost merges with the cheeks, and managed to achieve a clear effect of gentle, thoughtful, even melancholy. Świebodzińskiego mug of Christ is more naturalistic, the head proudly raised, looking sober and penetrating, slightly imperious. Adds majesty crown, but will make the biggest impression, just when it all gilding and deposited on the head. But it is a problem. Well, designing a Christlike crown apparently not been historical and heraldic consultation and decided on its sleek, classic shape, called the corona Apert , or open. The problem is that it is a medieval symbol of vassal princes and kings, as distinct from sovereign rulers (Emperor), who are entitled to Claus corona (the crown is closed). As you can see, eager to exalt it must be able to.

Distributed świebodzińskiego hands of Christ are directed slightly forward, as if in a gesture of thoughtfulness said: "Come to me, zdajcie under my care," in contrast to the profiles of the Rio, with his arms outstretched more and more with the intention of "behold, your whole". Both monuments cooperate well with their official names: Christ the Redeemer (Brazil) and Christ the King (Poland). Artistic quality difference can be seen primarily as compared physiognomy of both the sculptures in the expression of a strong, but outlined the simplest means, the face of Brazilian and fashioned with great care for detail, but without the creative spark - Polish. In sum, it is unlikely that the heirs' rights to the statue of the Rio wanted to assert copyright in a priest in Świebodzin.

This Statue is opened for all from last Sunday , 21-11-2010.

Cancun’s Underwater Sculpture Park

Cancun’s Underwater Museum : Museo Subacuático de Arte
Yucatan Peninsula : Cancun : Mexico
Just 10 meters beneath the sea level, here is a park of some 400 concrete sculpturs(though not yet complete) is going to be the world’s largest underwater museum.Yap ! I am talking about a museum of statues which is situated under the sea, located in the National Park on the West Coast of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc,an off-shore area of Isla de Mujeres.

These life-size figures, which were molded from various members of the ethenic community, will form a large artificial reef aiming to draw visitors and sea life to this uninhabited area of the park. The first set of 200 sculptures is scheduled to go underwater in June 2010. The project began in November 2009 as three sculptures were sunk under the supervision of prominent artist and creator of the underwater sculptors Jason de Caires Taylor.

Objectives of The Project
Cancun is a prominent tourist attraction. A huge number(more than 200000) of tourists come here every year for under water diving, to rejoice on the white sands and in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.This huge tourist traffic is a reason for degrading the marine resourses of the national park. In fact, the natural corals by West Coast National Park are very badly ruined. Both of these issues helps to build this sculpture garden.Main objectives to build this submarged garden are- to recreate the environment for coral species so that these tiny Cnidarian may retain their possesion and to to foster the touristic value for the so-called underwater sculpture garden that will never fail to pull the people of all over the world.

Interesting Facts
These statues have a common enemy too. Hurricane could displace and destroy this garden. Therefore, Jason de Caires Taylor uses special cement to make those sculptures, which is ten time harder than those for the common builder's. This cement is coral friendly. all these statues are weighing almost 120 tons, standing on a thick fiber glass. Before dive in there, the readers may like the following tube[Seeing is believing]:

Success !
The first three sculptures have already been a big draw, showing the growth of corals in only three months and grabbing the interest of tourists. This clearly shows the great success that the museum will have as more figures are dropped in the water to become the home of an abundant marine life and a wonderful exhibit for visitors.

Up side Down Helicopter from Sulzburg

romA Helicopter Upside Down in a Public Space had set beside the horse fountain, North to the Dom of Saint Rupart, in 2006. The Idea of such strange sculpture come out of the mind of Paola Pivi, an Italian (born 1971 at Milano) artist, who works in Anchorage (Alaska). the idea of such odd subject is to twist the people .

According to her opinion -
"a helicopter upside down in a public square, which meant that people driving in the car, riding the bus, or visiting that area of town would bump into a helicopter around the corner. That kind of unexpected encounter was really important to me.Museo Magazine

There is a board next to it explaining the significance of this poorly landed Westland Wessex aircraft, it says:

Usually, Paola Pivi does the impossible, combines the incompatible, and confronts us with the unexpected. The helicopter Wessex 558 - placed upside down - challenges the audience's imagination: All of a sudden it appears impossible that this tinny jumbo could ever fly: an allegory to the fast-rising careerist looking for a solution to the hectic daily routine. Paola Pivi's concern is the miracle of flight, the force, appeal, and fascination of flying objects, but also how helpless and devastated they appear when they fail to serve their obvious purpose"
Recently the rotor blade of this aircraft has been stolen. The police could not stop the alleged thief.News Source

Up Side Down Churches Around the World

These Churches are not a functional or operative Church, but sculptures. These Churches are the brain child of a  master artist , Dennis Oppenheim. This master artist has built the first one in 1997 named it "Device to Route out Evil" .After a brief search in Google, I have found only three of such art around the world, these are :
  1. Device to Route Out Evil, in Calgary , Canada - the most famous one, its a replacement the sculpture from Vancouver, Canada
  2. Up Side Down Church of Lincln, Nebraska, USA is the replica sculpture of a private collector.
  3. Up Side Down Church of Palma, Spain - This road side artwork is a quasi similar to the former one,  and the last
IIt is one of the unique modern art work, a subject of controversy among the christian community, but to the art lover, its an icon to express "an idyllic, contemplative spot on the edge of an energetic development which provides an ever-changing backdrop in the heart of an eclectic and storied community".

According to the Creator-
"In sculpture, economy of gesture is often the mark of a successful work. In Device to Root out Evil, the simple inversion of a building (a church) is enough to radically alter the content of this object, and propel it into the pantheon reserved for high art. The steeple, usually piercing the sky in its lunge toward heaven, is now at ground level, pursuing with vigor, the demons of the deep. The church becomes dynamic by cantilevering this meeting place into mid air, thus projecting all occupants into a spacial no mans land where equilibrium is exchanged for the dynamics of pursuit".

Here are those modern and unique art pieces story:
1. Controversy and Removal from Vancouver
Image from Roy and Susan from Panoramio

The art piece was placed in Harbour Green Park on Cordova Street as part of the Vancouver Biennale Sculpture Festival in 2005 before the sculpute were removed to Calgary, this was the location where it was primarily installed in Canada. Dennis Oppenheim is start to dismantled it when the Vancouver Park Board commissioners decided to remove this iconic landmark. Later it has been resurrected by the Glenbow Museum, Calgary- the current location.

The news published in Vancouver Sun, June 5 2008

It was controversial for New York City, for Stanford University too, the university didn’t want the controversial sculpture on its ground.Vancouverites then to make complaints about it,after 2 and half years since it was planted in Coal Harbour. Residents of the Coal Harbour neighbourhood complained that the more than six-metre-tall (and wide) statues blocked their scenic view. Other residents said it simply offended their Christian beliefs to see a church turned upside-down. The Park Board agreed.

2. Finding New home in Ramsay, Calgary

After exhibited worldwide by such Institutions as London’s Tate Gallery and The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and a controversial exit from Vancouver, the sculpture finally find it s permanent home in Calgary. Calgarians not only can handle critical conversation and debate, but welcome it. It is now in exhibition in the Glenbow Museum. Since the museum authority announced to reveal  the sculpture in September, 2008.

Size: 20' x 15' x 8'
Style and Material : It’s a New England Style country church is seen balancing on its steeple, as if it had been lifted by a terrific force and brought to the site as a device or method of rooting out evil forces using Galvanized structural steel, anodized perforated aluminum, transparent red Venetian glass, concrete foundations.
3. Second of its Kind, Lincoln, Nebraska

I haven't found proper information about this duplicate sculpture. This one is owned by Robert Duncan, a private collector (well known name in Lincoln with aviation) which lies on a 40-acre sculpture park.

This one is the same in size and style-

4.Up Side Down Church of Palma, Spain - the prototype
this one is the only one outside North America, perhaps a native Mallorca artist erects this prototype just outside the ABA Art Contemporani, in Palma. Probable erection date : 2004

This church follows the style of the Calgary, but it is significantly different than those of North America. Wooden frame is used along with steel. The windows are covered by white board from inside. This one is colorful. Corrugated colorful sheet is used instead of colorful transparent Venetian glasses.
