Giant Magpie Robin Statue at Dhaka
DIT Avenue: Dhaka: Bangladesh

Magpie Robin(Copsychus saularis) is the national bird of Bangladesh. Commonly known as Doyel (দোয়েল) has some ood impact on our national life. The bird is used in our currency landmark. Using as a symbol for Bangladesh. This bird also selected as the mascot of SA games of its last edition. This time, sight by walk edition is going to show the statue of a life size Oriental Magpie Robin. This statue caught my eye on my regular on road journey to cross Gulistan grid-lock, one of the busiest of Dhaka City. Any pedestrian can see this giant bird at the gate of Bangladesh Olympic Association building, while walking on DIT Avenue, from DIT building to Gulistan node.

Well, I have no proper idea about the size and height about this life size statue of this one. This statue is made in honor of 11th South Asian Games. There is another one of the same size at the entrance Prime Minister's Office. There is a popular sculpture of of this bird at Dhaka University, in the node of Shishu Academy and Curzon   Hall, but this one is like the original one looking for fly to catch. Enjoy.

Living in the converted shipping container is very recent concept. The first implementation of using container for housing solution is found in Trinity Buoy Wharf, Leamouth. Day by day this concept of using the container for temporary  or permanent housing solution is getting popular in western countries. Here are two examples from the Netharlands. This housing complexes are made of recycled and ready for reuse shipping containers, locally known as  Keetowningen or containerwoningen(which literally means Container Homes):

  1. HJ Wenckebachweg East Watergraafsmeer, Amsterdam
  2. Dampsterdiep, Gorningen

The blocks have a closed off internal area for safe bicycle parking, also including an automatic ventilation system with variable speeds. The heating is from a central natural gas boiler system. The hot water is supplied by one 50 liter tank per home and a high speed internet connection is included

Vuvuzela : Largest one to annoy you

Vuvuzela : Largest one to annoy you
Capetown : South Africa
I don't need to introduce vuvuzela to anyone who follows the soccer world cup 2010. This horn is the 'unsung' hero of the greatest show on earth. Usually it is just a 2 feet long instrument. Before the WC 2010 , it is just a horn using for South African celebration, after WC 2010 it gets a world wide attention, as well as giant size exposure too.

Hyundai-the Korean electronic giant constructed the world's largest working vuvuzela as part of a marketing campaign during the World Cup, on an unfinished overpass. The 35-meter (115 feet) blue vuvuzela in Cape Town was intended to be used at the beginning of each match; however, it had not yet sounded a note during the World Cup as its volume was a cause of concern to city authorities.

World's largest Jesus Christ Statue

World's largest Jesus Christ Statue

Swiebodzin (Swiebodzińskiego), Poland

Roman Catholic priests consecrated what local officials claim is the world’s largest statue of Jesus Christ in the presence of hundreds of Polish faithful on Sunday. Swiebodzin, a Polish town has officially unveiled the world’s largest Jesus statue- "Christ the King". The beautiful statue of Jesus surpasses the “Christ the Redeemer”, the famous Christ sculpture in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.

Giant statue of a crowned Jesus Christ being erected in Swiebodzin, Poland. The statue, similar in design to the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, will be more than 100ft tall. Locally known as Chrustusa white figure has more than 50 meters in height, of which 16 feet is piled a mound. On top of the 36-meter statue is gilded crown. Weight of the entire structure is estimated at 440 tonnes. This statue is lighter the in comparison to its progenitor. Miroslaw Kazimiez Patecki is the master architect of this Statue.

Similarity with The Redeemer is that both the Christ is clothed in long robes, standing motionless and outstretched hand, but the Polish version of the coat is much less clearcut and folded at the waist, a short tunic replaced the arm of the type imposed on the cape.

Here is a critical review by Piotr Sarzyński:

Head of Christ in Rio is gently lowered (looks over the city at the foot), and the face has a much more synthetic features, a beard almost merges with the cheeks, and managed to achieve a clear effect of gentle, thoughtful, even melancholy. Świebodzińskiego mug of Christ is more naturalistic, the head proudly raised, looking sober and penetrating, slightly imperious. Adds majesty crown, but will make the biggest impression, just when it all gilding and deposited on the head. But it is a problem. Well, designing a Christlike crown apparently not been historical and heraldic consultation and decided on its sleek, classic shape, called the corona Apert , or open. The problem is that it is a medieval symbol of vassal princes and kings, as distinct from sovereign rulers (Emperor), who are entitled to Claus corona (the crown is closed). As you can see, eager to exalt it must be able to.

Distributed świebodzińskiego hands of Christ are directed slightly forward, as if in a gesture of thoughtfulness said: "Come to me, zdajcie under my care," in contrast to the profiles of the Rio, with his arms outstretched more and more with the intention of "behold, your whole". Both monuments cooperate well with their official names: Christ the Redeemer (Brazil) and Christ the King (Poland). Artistic quality difference can be seen primarily as compared physiognomy of both the sculptures in the expression of a strong, but outlined the simplest means, the face of Brazilian and fashioned with great care for detail, but without the creative spark - Polish. In sum, it is unlikely that the heirs' rights to the statue of the Rio wanted to assert copyright in a priest in Świebodzin.

This Statue is opened for all from last Sunday , 21-11-2010.

"Myrtle" The World's Largest Desert Tortoise

"Myrtle" The World's Largest Desert Tortoise Statue
Joshua Tree : California : USA

World's largest Tortoise is located on the main drag of Joshua Tree California. Perhaps this largest is the tiniest of all "Largest" category. The sculpture is famous namely "Myrtle the Turtle".At first it was only a float, made of wood and wire framework with cement and plaster, and a thick enamel-type paint skin. Even the creator didn't know that this the largest tortoise sculpture in the world. The Sculpture was gifted to the Chamber of Commerce there, they were amazed to find out they had a World’s Largest.

History Behind Myrtle
"Myrtle the Turtle" started out as a concept in 1957, by Willis Keys and his wife, Guin. She suggested they enter a float in the next turtle race parade and asked Willis if he would build some kind of turtle on wheels that could be pulled by the two of them. They entered Myrtle in the Turtle Days Parade in Joshua Tree.

Google Street View
Willis believes "Myrtle" was actually the second turtle float entered in any of Joshua Tree’s turtle race parades. When Willis dismantled "Myrtle" from the scooter he asked the Joshua Tree Chamber if they wanted her. The chamber agreed and this is how she became a permanent resident of Joshua Tree.

Murtle of Turtle Island by Tom O'Key
She was then adopted by Howard Pierce, restored, and changed into her present-day form. One of Myrtle’s plaques records a dedication to Turtle Island and "Al Mackin, known as Mr. Turtle." The second plaque states "Donated to the Community of Joshua Tree by Howard Pierce in 1998.Therefore it was  quite a hard work for the CCJT to find out the creator of this desert turtle, and and to reveal the story behind this significant road side attraction of the city.
